Apologies, what with all the excitement of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and a quick trip to Paris I am running behind with my posts.  June’s technique is Brayering and this post has a card that I made today using this technique.

I have to admit that this is a technique that I have not attempted before so it took me a while to come up with something that  (a) was not too complicated for a first attempt and (b) I am happy to share the finished product with you.

For those of you who don’t know what a Brayer is, it is “a hand roller used in printmaking to spread ink”. There are a number of types available, Soft Rubber, Hard Rubber, Foam and Acrylic. The soft rubber ones are the most commonly used and this is the type I used and which is in the Stampin’ Up! Catalogue.

For the first project, I decided to use the brayer to make a simple background layer from a piece of Whisper White card stock for my card.

I inked up my brayer with three ink pad colours, Baja Breeze (in the centre) and Soft Suede and Cherry Cobbler on the edges. Because I had all three colours on the brayer at the same time, the trick is to ink up the lighter colour first and also to ink up the brayer well, There is no such thing as too much ink when using a brayer. You will note that I started the brayer just off the card stock and also ran it off the other side too. I rolled the brayer a number of times in an attempt to get an even coverage. I know that I probably did not ink mine enough but I quite liked the distressed look on this particular attempt so I decided to go with this one.

I then ran the background through my Big Shot using the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder,  but I only embossed two thirds of the front. I then used my Sanding Block over the embossed part so that the Whisper White card stock showed through.

Here is the finished card. I used Soft Suede, Baja Breeze and Cherry Cobbler card stock to cover the one third that I had not embossed and used the Scallop Edge Border punch on them.  The card base is a piece of Not Quite Navy and I also used another piece of Baja Breeze.

The greeting from the Sincere Salutations stamp set was stamped in Not Quite Navy and then punched out using the Decorative Label punch.
