It’s 4th of July, which here in the USA means that it’s a public holiday. Everyone is off work to celebrate Independence Day.
I have always found this to be a bit of a odd day because being British it means that my friends are celebrating their country’s independence from my home country. When we lived here (in Scripps Ranch, San Diego) the kids would take part in the local Independence Day parade – usually as part of the school or Girl Guide/Cub Scout entries. George and I would cheer them on but it still felt a little strange.
Independence Day also means fireworks. Over here, people are not permitted to set off fireworks in their own gardens. Although it’s a large(ish) city it is still temperate desert which means that the plants and ground in the common areas are like tinder boxes and things go up in flames really quickly. There are plenty of large displays to see instead. I should be able to see the Big Bay Boom this evening from the house- they usually last around 20-30 minutes but last year they went up in 15 seconds because of a technical glitch. I’ll post photos tomorrow if I am home in time to see them and provided they last longer than last year.
I’m off to a 4th of July party later back over at the old stomping ground in Scripps Ranch. My good friend Lorrie and her husband Scott are hosting a BBQ so it should be good fun. In the meantime, I’m spending the morning doing a little crafting and making some goodies for the Craft Fair that I am doing over in Woodley, Reading (back home in the UK) on 13th July. So far I have made a few post-it note holders to sell.

I found these little post-it note sets in a local store and thought that they would look cute if I recovered them using some of the Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper. I put a belly band around them to keep the cover closed – otherwise you might find that the post-its stick themselves to the inside of your handbag.

Next stop is sorting out my cards to sell. I have lots of card fronts made for swaps, and for going on my boards for shows etc. I now need to starting sticking them onto card fronts and packaging them up with an envelope ready to sell at the Craft Fair.
